2nd Grade Visual Arts

Second Grade is finishing up their studies of Impressionism. We will be looking at how, during the time of the Impressionists, the invention of photochemicals and easier access to photography equipment influenced portraiture in Europe and the United States. Students will study the work of contemporary photographer Carrie Mae Weems and learn to use digital still-cameras. They will apply some of Mary Cassatt’s composition and framing techniques to their own photos and paintings to create portraits of family members and friends. Afterwards, we will move into our studies of contemporary Pueblo art and artists. Pablita Velarde and Roxanne Swentzell are two artists who will figure prominently in our lessons.

As part of our Pueblo art unit, we will go on a field trip to the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe. Please take the time to visit their website by using the link on the right sidebar. We will be viewing and discussing the pottery in both the Santa Ana Pueblo Pottery exhibition and the Contemporary Pueblo Potters show.
